Tensions in Manipur: Women protestors try to storm NPP chief's home after controversial comment on Arambai Tenggol

NEW DELHI: Tensions escalated in Imphal West, Manipur, on Friday as a group of women protesters attempted to storm the residence of Yumnam Joykumar Singh, the state president of the National People’s Party (NPP) over his remark that Arambai Tenggol “attacked” Kukis, which was later revoked.
In a post on X, Singh had said, “Biren Ji misjudged the Kuki-Meitei conflict‘s roots… Why did his govt allow massive rallies, withdraw commandos from Churachandpur, and let groups like Arambai Tenggol attack Kukis?”
Arambai Tenggol’s name had later been removed, the chief confirmed, however, he is yet to issue a public apology.
“We held discussions with representatives of the mothers’ body. We’ve removed Arambai from the post. There was no intention to hurt sentiments,” Singh, the former deputy chief minister, said.
Acknowledging the issue, the NPP youth wing said that it was a “misunderstanding”. “We have since removed Arambai Tenggol from the post. It is most unfortunate that this misunderstanding occurred and we share your hurt. Let us work together to avoid such issues in future,” the letter said.
“NPP stands with Arambai Tenggol and other village volunteers who have sacrificed for our state,” it added.
Manipur has been grappling with persistent ethnic violence since May 2023, leading to more than 200 fatalities and mass displacement. The Rajya Sabha approved the resolution for President’s Rule in the state on Friday, following an intense debate between members of the ruling party and the opposition.
