NEW DELHI: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Anil Vij said on Sunday that he would stake claim for chief minister‘s post on “people’s demand” and on the basis of “seniority,” if the party comes to power in Haryana. The comments come at a time when the saffron party has already chosen Nayab Singh Saini as the chief ministerial face for the state.
“I never sought anything from the party till today…people from Haryana are coming to meet me.Even in Ambala, people tell me that I am senior-most why I did not become CM. On demand of the people, and on the basis of seniority, this time I will stake claim to become chief minister,” Vij told PTI.
Vowing to change Haryana’s ‘takdeer and tasveer‘ (fate and fortune), Vij said acknowledged that it was up to the party to decide the CM face but “people from across Haryana and people of my own constituency have been meeting me… I will stake claim for the chief minister’s post.”
“I am the party’s senior-most MLA and have won six elections and am contesting my seventh one. I have never sought anything from my party so far,” he added.
BJP has been witnessing an infighting for the CM post in Haryana which is “as normal for any political group,” after senior member Rao Inderjit Singh called it an “indignation” for not considering him for the top post.
Earlier, he had confirmed that Saini would remain BJP’s CM face as declared by party’s high command Amit Shah.
When pointed out that Saini has already been named as the chief ministerial candidate, Vij responded, “There’s no restriction on making a claim. I’ll put forward my claim, and then it’s up to the party to decide.”
Elections in Haryana on 90 assembly seats is scheduled for October 5. The results would be declared on October 8.
