'No one is above Constitution': BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Waqf Bill

NEW DELHI: Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut on Thursday said that “no one is above the Constitution” while referring to the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha.
Speaking to the reporters, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut said, “The whole country is happy today that Waqf will be regulated now, and then they will also be accountable.”
“The bottom line is that no one is above the Constitution of the country,” she added.
She attributed this development to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and said that “we have been able to see this fortunate day today because of the prime minister.”
“If they do anything illegal, the legal system can now ask questions. You can see what the condition was earlier. Be it Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh… works which were stuck for years are now being done by PM Modi,” she added.
Earlier, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi called the Waqf (Amendment) Bill a “brazen assault” on the Constitution, accusing the BJP of using it to fuel “permanent polarisation” in society.
“Whether it is education, civil rights and liberties, our federal structure or conduct of elections, the Modi government is dragging the country into an abyss where our Constitution will remain on paper and we know their intention is to demolish even that,” she said addressing Congress MPs at a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party.
“It is vital for all of us to continue to fight for what is right and just, to expose Modi government’s failing and intention to turn India into a surveillance state,” she added.
The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill earlier on Thursday, with the legislation subsequently moving to the Rajya Sabha for consideration.
