NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Thailand on Thursday for a two-day visit to participate in the sixth BIMSTEC summit. Upon his arrival at Don Mueang Airport, he was greeted enthusiastically by members of the Indian diaspora, shaking hands and waving to supporters.
Members of the Sikh community also performed Bhangra.
During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to hold discussions with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing regional cooperation.
On Thursday evening, he will join leaders from BIMSTEC nations including Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, and Bhutan, to witness the signing of the Agreement on Maritime Cooperation, a key step in fostering regional connectivity and security.
The summit will also provide an opportunity for PM Modi to engage with key regional leaders, including Nepalese Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, Bangladesh’s chief adviser Muhammad Yunus, and Myanmar’s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing.
In his departure statement, he emphasised BIMSTEC’s role as a crucial platform for promoting economic progress, connectivity, and regional development in the Bay of Bengal region over the past decade.
Following the conclusion of his Thailand visit, PM will travel to Sri Lanka, marking his first trip to the island nation since the election of its new president.
