Maruti's WagonR top-selling car, pips Tata's Punch

NEW DELHI: In the era of SUVs, Maruti’s old warhorse WagonR humbled the car sales rankings as it emerged as the highest-selling model in the country in FY25, ahead of Tata’s Punch.
WagonR is one of the key models for Maruti and at 1.98 lakh units its sales were a shade higher than 1.96 lakh units sold by Punch. Hyundai’s Creta was the third most-selling car with volumes of 1.94 lakh units.

The victory for WagonR is even sweeter, considering that it is the only small car in the list of Top 5 models, with the rest being SUV/UVs (Maruti Ertiga is the fifth largest).
Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing & sales) at Maruti Suzuki, said while many analysts had downplayed the strength of hatchbacks, numbers of WagonR clearly show that there is still a lot of juice left in the category. “India is a large country and there are all kinds of customers here, including those who love and want hatchbacks,” Banerjee said.
Maruti, he said, remains focused on building and selling cars of all body types, including SUVs, which have been a key focus area for the company. “We have a play across categories and in no way are trying to run down SUVs or any other category. We do not want to deprive customers of choice by not giving them options.”
The broader market, however, remains aligned aggressively towards SUVs. The share of SUVs in total car sales has more than doubled over past few years and they have emerged as the single-largest group. In FY25, SUVs are estimated to have a share of 54%, with total sales of 43 lakh units.
Another hatchback from Maruti’s stable, Swift, was sixth-biggest seller with sales of 1.79 lakh units. Baleno reported sales of 1.67 lakh units.
