Nokia reaches settlement with Amazon over video technology patents

Finland’s telecom giant Nokia announced on Monday that it had reached a settlement with Amazon over alleged patent infringements related to video technologies. Nokia confirmed that it had signed a patent agreement with Amazon, which covers the use of Nokia’s video technologies in Amazon’s streaming services and devices.
The agreement resolves all ongoing litigation between the two companies, but the details of the settlement will remain confidential, according to news agency AFP.
Nokia initially filed lawsuits against Amazon in October 2023, accusing the company of violating its patents across five global jurisdictions: the UK, the European Union’s patent court, Germany, India, and the United States.
The claims were related to Amazon’s Prime Video service and other devices, specifically involving patents for “video compression, content delivery, content recommendation, and aspects related to hardware.”
In addition to Amazon, Nokia had also filed a lawsuit against HP (formerly Hewlett-Packard) in a US court in October 2023, alleging that the company was using Nokia’s video technology without permission. This lawsuit was settled in October 2024.
