'Resolving conflict must be national priority': Rahul Gandhi meets Manipur leaders

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi met leaders from different communities in Manipur on Saturday, as the state continues to struggle with violence. He also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting the conflict-hit northeastern state.
In a post on X, Gandhi wrote, “Yesterday, I met with Congress leaders from different communities of Manipur in Parliament. It’s deeply concerning that after nearly two years of violence and now President’s rule, PM Modi has still not visited the state. The people of Manipur deserve peace and stability. Every Indian stands united in wanting a lasting solution to this crisis. Resolving this conflict must be our national priority.”
Manipur has been under President’s rule since February after the resignation of chief minister N Biren Singh, as announced by the ministry of home affairs.
The state has been grappling with ethnic violence since 2023, when clashes between the Meitei community and Kuki-Zo tribes led to over 250 deaths and widespread displacement. The government’s failure to control the unrest had raised questions about Singh’s leadership.
In December 2024, Singh publicly apologised for the violence and called for reconciliation, urging communities to forgive and rebuild peace.
However, Congress strongly opposed his resignation, accusing him of fuelling division in the state.
