Texas governor Greg Abbott lashed out at a Democratic lawmaker who appeared to mock his use of a wheelchair, saying that such rhetoric would only hurt the Democratic Party in future elections.
“It’s another day and another disaster by the Democrats. The reality is they have no vision, no policy. They have nothing to sell but hate, and Americans are not buying it,” Abbott said during an interview on Hannity on Tuesday.
The controversy stems from remarks made by representative Jasmine Crockett during a speech at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in Los Angeles over the weekend. While addressing the audience, Crockett referred to Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels.”
Following the backlash, Crockett attempted to clarify her statement on social media, asserting that her comments were not intended to reference Abbott’s disability.
“I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition,” Crockett wrote on X. “I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable. Literally, the next line I said was that he was a ‘Hot A** Mess,’ referencing his terrible policies. At no point did I mention or allude to his condition.”
Despite her clarification, the remark has drawn strong criticism from Republicans. Representative Randy Weber, R-Texas, told Fox News Digital that he plans to introduce a censure resolution against Crockett for what he described as “venomous rhetoric.”
