Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is facing intense criticism following controversial remarks she made about governor Greg Abbott during a Human Rights Campaign event.
Referring to Abbott, who has been paraplegic since a jogging accident at age 26, Crockett quipped, “Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there – come on now! And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a** mess, honey.” The comments sparked outrage from Republicans and conservative activists, with Representative Randy Weber (R-Texas) introducing a resolution to censure her. Some GOP members have even called for her expulsion from Congress.
The controversy escalated further when conservative activist Laura Loomer accused Crockett of assaulting a correspondent who questioned her about vandalism at Tesla showrooms—a reference to Crockett’s earlier comments suggesting that Elon Musk “should be taken down” (non-violently) on her birthday. Attorney General Pam Bondi warned Crockett that any harm to Tesla vehicles would be prosecuted as domestic terrorism, further heightening tensions.

Who is Jasmine Crockett?

Jasmine Crockett is an American lawyer and politician serving as the US Representative for Texas’s 30th congressional district since January 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Crockett represents a district that includes portions of Dallas and Tarrant counties, succeeding the late Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, who held the seat for three decades.
Born on March 29, 1981, in St. Louis, Missouri, Crockett earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Rhodes College and a Juris Doctor from the University of Houston. Her career began in public defense, where she worked tirelessly to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation in the criminal justice system. As an attorney licensed to practice law in Texas, Arkansas, and federal courts, she focused on civil rights and criminal defense.
Crockett’s political career took off when she was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2021, representing the 100th district. She made history as the only Black freshman and the youngest Black lawmaker in Texas during the 87th Legislative Session—one of the most conservative sessions in the state’s history. Despite facing substantial opposition, Crockett filed more bills than any other freshman legislator and led a coalition to pass significant criminal justice reforms. She was also one of the architects of the 2021 Texas House Quorum Break, a move by Democratic lawmakers to protest restrictive voting legislation.
During the 118th Congress, she was elected as the Democratic Freshman Leadership Representative and later became Vice Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. She also holds a leadership role as the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight and serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Additionally, she was named Communications Task Force Co-Chair for the Democratic Women’s Caucus.
