NEW DELHI: The central government has notified a 24 per cent increase in the salaries, allowances, and pensions of Members of Parliament (MPs) and former MPs, with effect from April 1, 2023.
The notification, issued by the ministry of parliamentary affairs on Monday, revises the monthly salary of MPs from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.24 lakh, while also increasing their daily allowances and pension benefits.
As per the notification, the daily allowance for sitting MPs has been raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500.
Former MPs will now receive a pension of Rs 31,000 per month, up from the earlier Rs 25,000.
Additionally, the extra pension for every year of service beyond five years has been increased from Rs 2,000 per month to rs 2,500.
The revision was carried out under the ‘Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act’ and is based on the Cost Inflation Index specified in the Income Tax Act of 1961.
This marks the first revision in MP salaries and allowances since 2018. In the last revision, the base salary of MPs was set at Rs 1,00,000 per month, alongside a Rs 70,000 constituency allowance to cover office expenses and voter interactions.
MPs also receive additional perks such as an annual allowance for phone and internet usage, 34 free domestic flights per year for themselves and their families, unlimited first-class train travel and a mileage allowance for road travel.
They are entitled to 50,000 free units of electricity, 4,000 kilolitres of water annually, and government-provided housing in New Delhi. Those who opt out of official accommodations can claim a housing allowance.
