Sharma has been a vocal advocate of gender sensitisation of the police personnel since they are the first point of contact for the victims.

The tenure of National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma ended on Tuesday.

“Today marks the final day of my nine-year tenure as the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW). These nine years have been like a roller coaster ride for me. Coming from a humble background to finishing three terms in the NCW is a long way I have walked,” she said.

“This journey is far too rich and profound to capture in a page or two; it would require a few books to do it justice. Along the way, I received an abundance of love, and I also learned how to handle criticism, which is an inevitable part of any work of this stature. Social media, with its freedom, can be ruthless at times, with people passing judgment without truly knowing you or your work. I wish they had taken the time to understand my efforts and intentions better,” she added.

She hoped that the women commission would continue to thrive and make even greater strides under new leadership.

“As I step down from this role, I carry with me cherished memories and a profound sense of fulfillment. I am confident that the NCW will continue to thrive and make even greater strides under new leadership,” he added.

Sharma has been associated with the women commission as a member since August, 2015 and held the additional charge as the chairperson from September 29, 2017 before becoming its chief in 2018, according to PTI.

Sharma has been a vocal advocate of gender sensitisation of the police personnel since they are the first point of contact for the victims.

She has been surrounded by many controversies during her tenure with the latest one being the alleged non-action in Manipur. She was also frequently blamed for not taking action in non BJP ruled states but she strongly denied the allegation.
