Watch: PM Modi receives traditional Bihari welcome in Mauritius

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday received a warm welcome upon his arrival in Mauritius, with the island nation honouring him through a traditional Bihari cultural performance known as Geet Gawai. The event, deeply rooted in Bhojpuri heritage, was performed as a tribute to the deep historical and cultural ties between India and Mauritius.
Geet Gawai, which was recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016, is a Bhojpuri musical tradition that blends songs, prayers, and dance. Traditionally performed during pre-wedding ceremonies, it serves as a medium of cultural expression and social cohesion among the Indian diaspora in Mauritius. Over the years, it has evolved beyond private gatherings and is now showcased in public performances, symbolising the shared heritage between the two nations.

Traditional Geet Gawai to welcome PM

PM Modi landed at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, where he was received by his Mauritian counterpart, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, PM Modi said that his visit aimed to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between India and Mauritius. “Landed in Mauritius. I am grateful to my friend, PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to engage with a valued friend and explore new avenues for collaboration in various sectors,” PM Modi posted on X.
The Indian community in Mauritius turned out in large numbers to welcome Modi, with some expressing their excitement through artistic tributes and cultural performances. A local artist spent four hours sketching Modi’s portrait, hoping for an autograph, while young members of the diaspora voiced their eagerness to meet him. Performers, who had prepared for ten days, presented a fusion of Kathak, Bharatnatyam, and Kuchipudi dance forms as part of the celebrations.
During his visit, PM Modi will participate in Mauritius’ National Day celebrations and hold high-level meetings with the country’s leadership. He is also set to inaugurate over 20 India-funded projects, including the Civil Services College and an Area Health Centre, both constructed with Indian assistance. These initiatives reflect India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius’ development, with previous projects including infrastructure, healthcare, and community programmes.
