Priyanka Chopra's mom Madhu Chopra says she traumatised her daughter by sending her to boarding school: 'That was heartbreaking'

Priyanka Chopra belonged to an army background as her father Ashok Chopra was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army. Meanwhile, her mom Madhu Chopra was an Indian Army doctor. Thus, despite the fact that Priyanka often talks about growing up in an environment where her parents gave her the freedom to be who she wants, they were also very disciplined with her. In a recent interview, Madhu Chopra has revealed how heartbreaking it was for them to send Priyanka to boarding school but it was needed for her to learn discipline and not get spoilt at home.
The actress was seven years old when she was just sent to study Lucknow’s La Martiniere Girls’ School. Madhu Chopra opened up on it during a chat with Priyanka, “When I sent her to boarding school, I had some self doubt at that time and I still regret it. Otherwise, I don’t regret any of my decisions.” She also felt that she traumatised her daughter by sending her off to boarding school.
Madhu said, “Chote se bache ko traumatise kia maine. Usko mentally prepare nahi kia tha ki aap boarding mein jaa rahe hain. (I traumatised a kid. I did not prepare her mentally that you are going to stay at a boarding school).” Priyanka had to give an admission test and she did so well in it that her mom just left her there. “That was heartbreaking for both of us but she was confident and she stayed, did well, but it was very traumatising for me, still is,” she siad.
However, here’s the reason why her parents thought it was important to send her to boarding school. Madhu recalled, “She was playing with her doll and she told her father, ‘Can’t you see I am busy?’ I heard that and I realised this is how I speak. So self doubt seeped in and I felt like my parenting was going wrong. She was loved and we felt like our love was spoiling her so we sent her away but this was not a good decision at all. Only she knows what she went through. After getting so much love, she must have felt abandoned. But she did good.”
She added that Priyanka must have felt abandoned and lonely and it was unfair to just send the child to boarding school without telling them what to expect. She never asked her daughter how she felt though. “I have no idea. I have never asked her. But she missed us, she hated not being with parents,” said Madhu.
Many years later, Priyanka was then sent to the US to study and post that, she went to Miss India. Thus, Madhu revealed that the actress could spend very little time with her mom. In retrospect, I realise that her development was wholesome,” said Madhu.
On work front, Priyanka was last seen in ‘Love Again’ and ‘Citadel’.
