Pritam defends BLACKPIN's Jennie amid plagiarism claims: 'Rather than tearing artists down...'

Music composer Pritam has addressed the plagiarism allegations against BLACKPINK‘s Jennie. In a lengthy statement, Pritam supported Jennie, explaining that similarities in music are inevitable. He also urged critics to stop criticizing artists and instead appreciate their work, emphasizing that no artist intentionally copies others.
Check out the post here:
In his latest Instagram post, Pritam discussed the comparisons between BLACKPINK’s Jennie’s song “Like Jennie” and the “Rani” theme from “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.” He pointed out that although “Rani” and “Jennie” rhyme, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a copy.
“Rani and Jennie are names that rhyme, so a similar flow in one phrase doesn’t make it a copy. In music, minor similarities are bound to happen—whether through rhymes, phrasing, or even within the same genre,” he wrote, backing Jennie.
Pritam, who has faced plagiarism allegations in the past, emphasized the importance of looking beyond minor similarities. He noted, “Instead of focusing on tiny details, it’s important to see the bigger picture. In today’s interconnected world, where artists share the same platforms, no one is deliberately trying to copy someone else’s work. Creating a song takes immense effort, and if an artist truly resonates with an idea, they can simply collaborate.”
“Music is about creativity, unique artistic perspective, influence, and sometimes pure coincidence—especially when artists exist on the same creative wavelength. Rather than tearing artists down, celebrating their work makes far more sense,” he further posted.
Jennie, a prominent member of K-pop band BLACKPINK, recently released a promo for her new track “Like Jennie.” While fans praised the clip, Indian listeners noticed similarities with the “Rani” theme from Karan Johar’s 2023 film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, composed by Pritam and featuring Alia Bhatt. They pointed out the similar beats and flow, as well as the uncanny ring of “Jennie” and “Rani,” which led to plagiarism claims against Jennie.
One user wrote, “The funniest thing about this whole Jennie/Alia debate is that, we Indians were shocked that for once it was someone else who stole from Pritam and wasn’t him stealing the music. And Alia had nothing to do with the music other than walking with her back looking like THAT”.
While Pritam has issued a statement addressing the plagiarism allegations, Jennie has not yet responded to the claims.
