Yami Gautam on being termed 'underrated' in the industry: 'I knew that I had to be consistent'

Actress Yami Gautam recently addressed being frequently labelled as “underrated” in the industry, viewing it as a compliment that motivates her to explore and showcase more of her talent. Despite starting strong with her debut film ‘Vicky Donor’, she was initially cast in supporting romantic roles in movies like Badlapur and Kaabil. In recent years, she has portrayed some unique roles in ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike‘ and ‘Article 370’, and now, the actress is back with her latest release, ‘Dhoom Dhaam’, on OTT.

Yami acknowledges the expectations her audience has of her and sees them as a source of motivation. “For the longest time in my life, I have been termed as someone who’s underrated, and that’s a compliment in a way. It tells you that you’re still due for an opportunity that you’re worthy of. But it just doesn’t happen overnight. You have to be patient, you have to be resilient. You have to have an eye for the right roles and scripts… I knew that I had to be consistent,” she shared in an interview with PTI.The ‘Kaabil’ actress also spoke about the unpredictability of Bollywood in the same conversation. She emphasised the importance of evolving with every role while staying grounded. Yami added that success grants a certain level of power, but it can deteriorate at any time, as she believes the industry is built that way. The trend of success for a film also changes over time, so getting arrogant or overly warm with success never helps a star. The actress believes that the power lies in the hands of the audience and the story.
“So, I’m literally just serving the script and doing something for myself and my audience. That’s how I look at it,” she concluded.
